Fleming's early novels are set in a large eastern city like one in which he grew up. Most of the characters are Irish-American, many of them members of the same families. All of the men and women are deeply, sometimes tragically, involved in the city's politics. The novels have been compared to William Faulkner's in their intense preoccupation with a slice of American geography.
